Oceana

When tasked with illustrating Oceana’s marine turbine for the general public, it was imperative that we understand how it worked. Several information-gathering meetings with Oceana’s CEO/Product Architect and stacks of rapid fire sketches later, we reached enough understanding to dive into creative development. We were given reign explore abstract and real world concepts to bring the turbine to life. Our strategy to balance complex engineer-speak was to weave a captivating narrative around the potential of marina energy that would inspire people to further investigate Oceana’s compelling solution.

Creative execution depended heavily on unity between artistic elements generated by our design team and product blueprints and 3D renderings provided by Oceana. Simpler illustrations were created to isolate specific features for easier audience retention. Like underwater environments, it was important that each scene possessed constant, fluid motion. We remained highly engaged with Oceana throughout production to corroborate our designs with their science.

In the engineering world, creative storytelling is not the precedent. The resulting video– a playful, thought-provoking piece starring a few cute British guys, Mother Nature, and a radical redefinition of what a marine turbine should be– challenges how engineers can talk about their work. Oceana’s bold thinking and embrace of our creative sensibilities resulted in a piece that supports their mission to disrupt the energy sector. And we certainly hope they do.
